Do internal links create new authority?
Backlinks and organic clicks build authority. Internal links pass existing authority between related pages.
The claim
“Google likes topic clusters, so adding enough internal links creates authority.”
- The confusion
- The route used to pass authority is mistaken for the source of that authority.
An internal link connects two pages on your site. It can help readers reach a related answer and help search engines discover the destination. It can also pass authority the linking page already has.
Calling the arrangement a “topic cluster” does not add a new source of authority. The useful question is which page has relevant authority, and where its links pass it.
Find the starting page
A chain-repair guide earning organic clicks for chain-repair queries is a useful candidate for a link to a related repair-booking page. The query relationship and click history give you a concrete starting point to investigate.
Ten new posts with no relevant links or reported organic clicks do not establish the same starting authority just by linking to each other.
The PageRank exercise in the guide shows how outgoing links can divide a contribution. Its equal shares are illustrative. Exact modern link weights are not measured there.
Review one link path
- In Search Console’s Performance report, select the proposed linking page and open Queries.
- Check relevant organic clicks and repeated top-three or top-five positions. Inspect its relevant backlinks too.
- Identify the destination page and the query you want it to compete for.
- Put a direct link in a paragraph where the destination continues the explanation. Use anchor text, the clickable words, that describes the destination.
- Save both URLs, the anchor text and the date. Compare each page’s query-level positions and clicks over consistent periods.
Maintain the route
When a destination begins ranking, the source link may still be helping it. Review the history before removing the link. “The cluster is complete” and “Google understands our site now” do not establish that the destination can keep its position without that authority.
Trace one edit
- The action
- You link ten new, low-ranking repair posts to one booking page.
- What changes
- Readers and search engines have additional paths to the booking page.
- What remains unproven
- The links do not establish that those posts have earned relevant authority to pass on.
